Charles Dziuban is director of the Research Initiative for Teaching Effectiveness at the University of Central Florida (UCF) where has been a faculty member since 1970. Since 1996, he has directed the impact evaluation of UCF’s distributed learning initiative. In 2000, Dziuban was named UCF’s first ever Pegasus Professor for extraordinary research, teaching, and service and in 2005 received the honor of Professor Emeritus. In 2005, he received the OLC award for Most Outstanding Achievement in Online Learning by an Individual and was named an inaugural OLC Fellow in 2010. He is a frequent author and invited presenter with his book Conducting Research in Online and Blended Learning: New Pedagogical Frontiers written with Picciano, Graham and Moskal appearing in August 2015.
Cristi D. Ford is the assistant vice provost for Learning Innovation Initiatives in the Center for Innovation in Learning and Student Success (CILSS) at the University of Maryland University College. In her role, Ford is able to offer thoughtful leadership in identifying promising next generation online learning innovations as well as lead the implementation of this plan through rapid prototyping and piloting. Ford has expertise in building new online learning programs and research related to teaching and learning in the online environment. She also serves as a volunteer member of the Middle States Commission in Higher Education where she reviews distance education programs as a part of the accreditation team. In 2013, she was received a Best-In-Track award from the Online Learning Consortium for a paper entitled, “Three Institutions, Three Missions, One Goal: Addressing Quality Assurance in Online Education.” She holds a PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and undergraduate and graduate degrees in the field of Psychology from Hampton University and University of Baltimore, respectively.
Katrice A. Hawthorne, PhD, is associate director of Evaluation and Research for UMUC’s Center for Innovation in Learning and Student Success. Her research interests include metacognition, motivation, and low-stakes assessment. She has published and presented on topics related to teacher education pedagogy, program evaluation, measurement, and assessment. Hawthorne earned a PhD in Education from Old Dominion University, an MA in English from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a BA in English from Virginia Union University.
Connie Johnson has worked in academics for over twenty years including the roles of faculty (ground and online), program chair, vice president of Academic Affairs and vice president of Student Affairs. In her current role at CTU, Johnson leads Academics and Student Affairs including faculty, curriculum, student advising, registrar’s office, prior learning assessment, and the learning center for the university, including ground and online classes.
Manoj Kulkarni has a passion for applying technology to transform learning experiences. He is an active advisor to educators and investors motivated to advance cutting-edge solutions for greater teaching and learning effectiveness. Kulkarni is the former chief technology and innovation officer for Career Education Corporation (CEC) where he and his team pioneered the development of predictive analytics-based personalized learning and adaptive teaching capabilities across large-scale ground and online institutions powered by the Realizeit platform.
Patsy Moskal is the associate director for the Research Initiative for Teaching Effectiveness at the University of Central Florida (UCF) where she evaluates the impact of technology-enhanced learning and serves as the liaison for faculty scholarship of teaching and learning. In 2011 Moskal was named an OLC Fellow “In recognition of her groundbreaking work in the assessment of the impact and efficacy of online and blended learning.” She has written and co-authored numerous works on blended and online learning and is a frequent presenter on these topics. Patsy’s co-authored book--Conducting Research in Online and Blended Learning: New Pedagogical Frontiers--with Dziuban, Picciano, and Graham, was published in August 2015.
Jim Thompson is the CEO of CogBooks, an online learning delivery system that intelligently adapts to the individual learner and provides tools that enable educators to better understand and support each student. Thompson began his career as a Physics researcher before moving to the high-tech industry, working for Thermo Electron and Silicon Valley based Applied Materials. By founding CogBooks, he followed his passion to apply science-based methods to make learning more effective, personalized, and accessible. On the 30th September 2014, CogBooks was announced as a winning finalist of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Next Generation Courseware Challenge.
Nick White is the director of Competency Based Learning Solution at Capella University. White's constant goal is to find ways to make learning more effective and efficient for adult learners through innovative design practices and the smart use of technology. He leads a team of curriculum specialists, instructional designers, and project managers that work collaboratively with faculty members to design exceptional online programs and courses. He received a master's degree in instructional design, is an award winning instructional designer and administrator, is currently the vice-chair of the WCET steering committee, and is a frequent speaker at national conferences.
Thomas Cavanagh serves as associate vice president for Distributed Learning at the University of Central Florida. In this role, he oversees the distance learning strategy, policies, and, practices of the nation’s second–largest university. In his career, Tom has administered e-learning development for both academic (public and private) and industrial (Fortune 500, government/military) audiences. A regular presenter at academic and industry conferences, he is an award-winning instructional designer, faculty member, and, administrator. He has served in various capacities for EDUCAUSE, the Sloan Consortium, the Florida Virtual Campus, the Florida Distance Learning Association, and other organizations. He is also an award-winning author of three crime novels. His academic credentials include a Ph.D., Texts & Technology, University of Central Florida; M.B.A., Technology Management, University of Phoenix – Orlando Campus; and a B.S., Communications, University of Miami.
